Bone Thugs, some works in progress

My first 15 points of Cryx painted models are all sitting on my table at once; I'm painting them as if they were one big unit. We'll question the wisdom of that, and how successful an idea that is later. Here are a couple initial pictures of my Cryx, works in progress of course...

Could this be the first model in a "pink" army? Somehow the pink magic trail from the "skull in hand" of my Skarlock (and what Cryx player would begin without a Skarlock?) seemed to fit the look of the model. I'm not sure if this will translate to any of the rest of my models or not. The look of the bone came out really well, in my opinion. It still needs to be lightened a bit, but I started out with Menoth base with Gryphonne Sepia wash from GW, and then went over it with Menoth base (again) and when I'm done I'll use Menoth highlight for the final touches. It reminds me of some of the "dirty bones" we used to look at in my archaeology labs years ago.

Then I had the idea to take this look to the bases of the army. I had originally planned on making the bases look like a roiling mist (sculpted from putty), with white and light gray paints, but then I decided to paint them to match the bone look of the Skarlock, and this is how Gaspy's base turned out...

More to come!

Just wanted to say the bone looks good and dirty. The base looks really nice too. Did you sculpt the base or did it come with the model?

Yeah, I want them to look like they just crawled out of the dirt. I sculpted the base texture myself. It was pretty easy. I just flatted out the putty and dimpled it many many times with the mini-awl (or whatever that sculpting tool is called). The army will look like it's standing on a mass of gnarled bone.

It sounds cool! You might consider adding a bone here and there on the bases, perhaps coming out of the sculpted base. Regardless, nice work =)
